Roots and Reflections: Saying Goodbye to the Zinnias

|

Hey there, sweet friend! This is Roots & Reflections, my weekly catch-up series where I invite you into my garden, my home, and a few of the messy, beautiful moments in between. Each week I share what’s growing, what’s inspiring me, and what I’m learning — both in the garden and in life. I’m so glad you are here!

Saying Goodbye to the Zinnias

Here in Colorado, my zinnias, cosmos, and most of my flowers have officially wrapped up for the season — except my tough little Iceberg roses still hanging on. I’ll admit, I felt a little sad about saying goodbye to all that color, so I decided to bring in a little joy by ordering daffodil bulbs to plant in the raised beds where my beloved zinnias once bloomed. They’ll pop up first thing in spring, and then I’ll tuck zinnias right on top for a full season of blooms!

The day before our first frost that took our zinnias for the season.

Another bright spot this week was after Bible study on Wednesday — I got to sneak over and snuggle my new grandson while his parents got ready for their newborn photoshoot at home. Truly the sweetest gift.

And because I can’t help myself, I’ve already started a bit of Christmas prep (you can peek at my first list here!). I know it’s early, but sitting by the tree at Thanksgiving brings me so much joy. We’ll be pulling out the decor soon and putting up our tree on November 1st! Stay tuned — my Christmas home tour is coming around November 17th, and I can’t wait to share it with you. 🎄

Before you go, make sure to explore the rest of this week’s Roots & Reflections post — and don’t miss the giveaway at the end in celebration of this very first weekly edition!

Friends I Want You to Meet

I love sharing my friends with you and today I have two lovely women who I am blessed to call friends!

First up is my dear friend Charla . She has a website named Gardening With Charla. Charla and I met in Texas at a creative retreat and it was an instant friendship. We hare the love of the Lord and the garden and family. I consider her my garden mentor and love picking her brain. Charla is from Texas and just released her very first E-Guide, Easy Spring Bulbs for Warm Climates: A Beginners Guide! Check it out and show her some love.

Next up is my other lovely friend from Texas, Elizabeth! I also met Elizabeth while visiting Texas for the same creative retreat which just happened to be close to her home. We had originally met on Instagram and she was so sweet to meet up and show me around. Ms. Elizabeth is as creative as they come and she has a beautiful website called The Country Peony and this past Sunday she launched her 6th Vintage Quilt Jacket Collection! Go show her some love too. Visit her collection HERE!

  8. Hello… Here in SW Ontario Canada Zone 6a, I have tucked a pot of 2′ high skinny Queeny Lime Blush Zinna’s against the wall of the house under the eves. The Zinna’s have survived cold nights so far. I also have been carrying in and out of the house 3 pots each night/morning. Blue berry Muffin Mix Petunia, Marigold Fireball (my new favorite 12″)and Amaranthus, Velvet Curtains. Seeds ordered from https://www.damseeds.com/. 20. This was my first year planting zinnias and I am hooked. I loved the bright colors and how easy they were to grow. Sadly, we had our first frost this week and they are gone. I live in New Mexico at 7,000 ft. so I feel lucky they lasted as long as they did. Can’t wait to do it again next year.

      1. Congratulations on the baby.
It must be an exciting time.

Daffodils are my favorite spring bulbs.

Putting our tree up November 1st too.

  21. Your article on saving seed after a frost helped me to harvest even more seeds from our family‘s heirloom Zinnias. We call them “Grandpap Oliver’s”, and they have been grown in the family since my husband’s great, great grandfather. I only had space for a few plants in a new garden site this year, and only a few blooms had matured before our first frost, so the article really helped! Now I’ll have more to share and keep the tradition alive! Thank you!

  26. Congratulations on your beautiful grandbaby! You will have such a special holiday season!
We haven’t had frost yet here in Arkansas. My zinnias are nearing the end, but I did have a migrating monarch stop by for the rainy weekend.

  27. We’ve had frost warnings on and off for the past two weeks here in southern Idaho and somehow have missed dipping below freezing during that time (thankfully). It’s coming though… fast and hard. Still have roses and dahlias.
Congratulations on the birth of your sweet grandson!

  28. From Texas
I probably have a few more weeks that I can get out of my zinnias but have time this week that I can clear my garden and start planting bulbs for the spring! This was my second year with zinnias and was also able to harvest sooo many flowers to dry out for next years seeds!
