August in My Garden: Why This Is My Favorite Month for Zinnias

August in my garden is pure magic. This is hands-down my favorite time of year for zinnias—they’re tall, vibrant, and practically begging to be cut and enjoyed. The beds are bursting with color, and I can’t walk outside without a pair of snips in hand.

This post is heavy on the pictures (because honestly, August blooms speak for themselves!) and light on fuss—just the way I like it. I want you to feel like you’re strolling the garden with me, soaking in every shade, petal, and bee’s happy buzz.

The Zinnias Are Stealing the Show

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know zinnias hold my heart. And August in my garden is their time to shine. Each morning, I’m out there cutting multiple bouquets—some for my own home, but most for friends, neighbors, and anyone who happens to walk by and admire them.

There’s something deeply joyful about giving flowers away. It’s like sending a little piece of sunshine along with someone. Plus, the more I cut, the more the zinnias bloom. Win-win!

The pollinators have been incredible this year! So many butterflies, a few hummingbirds and bees too. Check out the sleeping huge bee under the zinnia below!

My In-Ground Zinnia Bed

Now let’s stroll over to my in ground bed full of Lilliput zinnias, cosmos, California poppies and lemon basil all from seeds I got from Outsidepride seeds. I pinched the cosmos so still waiting on those to bloom!

They have a mind of their own but I love the unruly look! Aren’t the blooms so pretty leaning over my expandable willow fencing? I added this to not only support the blooms but keep my dogs out!

And yes, I’m still battling the Japanese beetles. However not as many lately! I simply drop them into a bowl of soapy water when I find them. They are on my roses out front too.

Bouquets for Days

I’ve lost count of how many arrangements I’ve made this month already. Some are big, overflowing armfuls in farmhouse pitchers, and others are sweet little jars tucked on nightstands and kitchen counters.

I save jars and grab them at the thrift store to hand out to anyone who stops by!

Nothing is off limits to hold my zinnias. This blue and white striped pitcher was such a great find at Walmart this year!

VEGO Raised Beds

Early this summer I set up these three gorgeous VEGO raised beds along our fence. This is my second attempt at growing seeds in them. Sadly, my soil is proving to not be the best once again. This happened last year too in my other beds.

Next year I will be adding contactors sand and new compost along with worm castings to remedy this. A few are popping up but these are very stunted and not thriving. But that’s what gardening is all about, learning and adjusting for the next time.

Dahlias and Other Pretty Spots

And the dahlias in these twin VEGO planters are slow too. You can read HERE about which ones I planted. But Maybe I will stick to zinnias. Ha!

Below are my volunteer cosmos that are actually blooming on the side of my raised beds!

These pots have creeping thyme, anemones, and boxwood. The bottom one is green envy zinnias! Did you spot the lavender in back too?

August in My Garden: My Favorite Month for Zinnias

August in my garden is a reminder of why I love what I do. It’s colorful, abundant, and meant to be shared. I hope this season brings you just as much joy as it does me.
