Greenhouse Dreaming and Inspiration

This week something exciting happened and I couldn’t wait to tell you! We cut down the apple tree in our backyard. Now I know you might be thinking , why is this exciting Kelly? Well it was dying and diseased so it needed to happen. I was a bit sad to no longer have apples, but also over the moon because it left a big empty space in our backyard perfect for a greenhouse or potting shed!
So that’s why I was so excited! Check out the before and after of the apple tree below.
You can tell by the above pictures that even though it’s winter here in Colorado, she doesn’t look good. Last year one of her huge branches full of apples in the summer completely fell off and almost knocked over our fence. Our poor neighbors had so many of our apples in their yard. It was then that we were told that it needed to be removed. We used my sister’s neighbor Carl who owns his own tree company called Front Range Stump Grinding LLC. He takes care of all of our trees and is the best!
So as I mentioned above I have been dreaming of putting a greenhouse or potting shed in its place. It’s hard to tell in these pictures but there is a ton of room. Room enough for a 10ft by 12ft structure if we need!
Greenhouse Dreaming
When I say greenhouse I mean a space that we can use for growing seeds but also host dinner parties, tea parties, storage and possibly even use for hosting photo shoots. A multi purpose building if you will. Below are a few inspiration photos.
So far I have a dedicated Pinterest board, saved folders on Instagram and TikTok all for greenhouse inspiration and several screenshots on my camera roll! Here are a few more I love.
But I have one big question. Should my greenhouse be black or white? I tend to lean towards black because our house in a dark gray, peppercorn by Sherwin Williams.
So I found this greenhouse that I liked that was black but I’m not sure. So, do I paint the greenhouse to match our house color? So much to think about!
My Inspiration
But I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you where this dream originated! A few weeks ago we had dinner with some friends and the husband had just built his wife ( a former teacher friend of mine) a gorgeous greenhouse out of reclaimed vintage windows. It has brick floors and honestly it is stunning! It was finished this past September and ever since I saw it on her social media knew I wanted to see it in person!

So as you can see from these photos her greenhouse is stunning! I have been chatting with her husband about seeing if he can help me build one in our backyard. I will keep you posted if we can make it happen. In the meantime I think I need to start collecting some vintage windows. Let me know if you have any I can take off your hands! ha ha
Greenhouse Dreams
I know I have been talking about this for awhile but I needed my husband on board! Once my husband said we could remove the tree I knew he was getting serious about this greenhouse idea of mine. I joke that I am the dreamer and he is the practical one, we balance each other perfectly! Plus once he saw their greenhouse in person he could not deny how incredible it really was.
Plus, I might have shared with him another Instagram account that rents her greenhouse out and does VERY well. So his banker wheels have been turning on ways that we can maybe monetize the greenhouse. Here is that IG account, @brbmarket if you want to see it and learn how she rents it out to local photographers. It’s genius! I guess I just need to start connecting with photographers. Or maybe I should at least get the greenhouse started first. Ha!
So this post is part one of a series that will hopefully end with us having a greenhouse in our backyard! I will be sharing more as things unfold. As of now I will be saving my pennies (these things aren’t cheap!) and scheming up fun ways to pay for it as well.
