Tuesdays With Tracy: Welcoming Autumn

|

Good morning!

Autumn is here in Colorado in all its glory.  The leaves are changing and falling.  We have gone to several football games and the weather has been wonderful. We have been a football family forever, everyone loves it!  We’re actually a sports family, we love it all!

WELCOMING AUTUMN INTO OUR HOME

I love the early morning sunlight peeking into the living room.  I was sitting on the sofa doing some bible study and noticed how beautiful the light was landing everywhere, so of course I had to grab my phone and capture the moment.

I have introduced some simple changes to welcome Autumn into our home.  Pillows and throws are an easy and simple way to make some seasonal changes.  The plaid throw behind the gold pillow will actually remain on the sofa through Christmas and winter.

Welcoming Autumn with Wheat Stalks

I love to decorate with wheat stalks in the Fall.  I found this tortoise shell vase at a vintage market a few years ago and it seems to have found a home on our island every Autumn. I’m loving the morning light and shadows.

Welcoming Autumn in the Dining Room

In the dining room about this time of year I flip the old shutters to the green side.  These were originally a dirty white and my husband, Larry, painted one side blue and one side green.  It makes for a fun change throughout the year.

The dining room table is set with a tray and some Fall candles.  I love making a centerpiece on a tray because it can easily be moved when we sit down to eat.  The large hurricane candleholders can also easily be moved.

Welcoming Autumn in the Entry

More wheat on the sideboard!  During the summer months the long oval scalloped tray held lots of collected seashells.  I decided to flip it over to give an elevated look.

This is one of my favorite photos.  We were traveling in Italy and our friends took the photo and surprised us with it when we came home.  It just brings back such fond memories.

Recently I read something from a woman who said, “your home is definitely collected if you have random chairs with stacks of books.”  Well, that gave me a good chuckle.  This chair is sitting in a corner of the dining room.  It is an old antique that my mother collected and had sitting next to a sideboard in her home.  The green book was her Garden book.  I added a vintage silver bowl filled with matches collected from lots of restaurants.  Sadly most restaurants don’t offer matches anymore.

A Fun DIY Project

Do you ever get a bee in your bonnet?  Well I do! Ha?   Last Christmas I hung some plates on my Christmas tree, I know, I’m a little crazy. When hanging the first plate it fell and crashed to the ground.  I saved the pieces and it later occurred to me that I had heard about a Japanese art named Kintsugi.

It is a beautiful way of repairing what’s broken and restoring it to a new life.  Kintsugi is the art of embracing brokenness and finding beauty.  Below is a beautifully restored plate.  Glue with gold mica is typical.

This is how I started with a kit from Amazon.

And this is my result…ha ha ha!!!

I made the mistake of trying to piece it together all at once.  It looked great but then when I left it to dry it settled in a wonky way. I got to thinking about it and how it reflects me, yup, I am so wonky!  But just as God gives me grace and sees me as whole, because of what he has done, I need to give myself grace. And, I will be putting this wonky plate on my Christmas tree!

When Do You Welcome Autumn?

  • When you decorate for Fall, do you switch out pieces seasonally or refresh with small swaps(like pillows, throws, and candles)?

With temperatures cooling it’s time to cozy up.

Cheers to getting our cozy on!

Love,

Tracy
