How to Make a DIY Watering Can Fountain (Easy Solar Pump Garden Idea)
It’s budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and adds the prettiest soft water sound to your outdoor space without needing electricity. I used my favorite solar pump and turned a simple watering can into the cutest little water feature.

Let me show you how easy it is to make!
What You’ll Need
- Watering can (metal or plastic)
- Solar fountain pump ( I used THIS one!)
- A bowl, planter, or shallow container (for the base)
- Small rocks or bricks or bucket (to prop the watering can)
- Optional: clear tubing (if needed for your pump) mine had this!
How to Make a Watering Can Fountain
1. Set Your Base
Place your bowl or planter where you want your fountain and fill it with water. I used this old metal bin. since it matched my watering can!

2. Add the Solar Pump
Place your solar fountain pump inside the container, making sure the solar panel is in a sunny spot. The pump literally suction cups to the bottom. I also weigh it down with rocks. For this fountain I used the clear tubing that came with the fountain.
(If you haven’t used one before, I share all my favorite tips in this post!)

3. Create the Pouring Effect
Run the pump tubing up into the watering can and position it so the water flows out through the spout. This creates the illusion that the watering can is “pouring” water. I didn’t like that the tube showed so I used some terracotta pots and stacked them and wove the tube through them.

4. Prop and Style
Use rocks or an upside-down pot to tilt the watering can forward slightly. Adjust until it looks natural. I used my white enamel bucket to set the watering can on, but I want to switch it out for a taller terracotta pot to make it match the other pots.
Add your personal touch with floating flowers (zinnias are my favorite!), stones, or moss.

A Few Easy Tips
- Keep the water level high so the pump runs smoothly
- Clean the pump occasionally to prevent clogging
- Place in full sun for best results
