DIY Pinecone Flower Wreath

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent a fair chunk of time collecting pinecones on walks or in your yard, only to let them pile up in a bowl on the coffee table, waiting for their moment to shine. Well, that moment has arrived and of course I found a way to tie in flowers! Today, I’m going to show you how to transform those ordinary pinecones into gorgeous “flowers,” and turn them into a wreath that will add a touch of natural charm to your home, any time of year.

Pinecone Wreath Inspiration

I am constantly decorating with pinecones so when I saw my friend Leslie from My 100 Year Old Home make a pink Spring wreath from pinecones I knew I wanted to give it a try! My version is un-painted but maybe when Spring rolls around I will paint mine too! Isn’t hers gorgeous?

Here is mine in our entry!

Pinecone “Flowers”?

I never knew this but when you slice the base of a pinecone, you’re suddenly able to see its “petals” in a completely new way. You’re left with something that looks so much like a rustic, nature inspired bloom. These pinecone flowers lend a casual vibe that’s perfect for the front door, a cozy mantel, or even above the bed in a guest room for that homey, welcoming feel. I placed mine in our entry way!

Supplies You’ll Need:

Here is the list of items needed for this fun DIY!

  • Any size wreath form (grapevine or foam works great)
  • Pinecones (look for ones that are sturdy and uniform in size)
  • A small, sharp saw or strong garden clippers (for cutting the pinecones)
  • Hot glue gun and plenty of glue sticks
  • Moss (sheet or loose)
  • A red ribbon for a pop of festive color
  • Optional: A little glitter or metallic paint for an extra sparkle

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prep the Pinecones:
Start by selecting pinecones that have opened nicely. Using a small saw or sturdy pair of garden shears, carefully cut off the bottom portion. The bottom will be what you keep! Don’t be discouraged if a few crumble—it takes a bit of patience and a steady hand. Once you’ve got a nice clean cut, you’ll notice those pinecone “petals” fanning out like a flower. It’s a bit like magic!
  2. Arrange the “Flowers”:
Before you whip out that hot glue gun, do a dry run. Lay your pinecone flowers around the wreath form to figure out the best placement. I found a staggered, overlapping pattern looks the most natural. Once you’re happy with the layout, it’s time to secure them.
  3. Glue Them Down:
Working in sections, use a generous dab of hot glue to attach each pinecone flower to your wreath. Press firmly and hold for a few seconds, making sure they’re really stuck in place. If some of the pinecone flowers are a bit smaller, tuck them in between larger ones for a more layered look.
  4. Add a Touch of Green:
Next, weave in some moss around the pinecones to fill any gaps. This step not only helps blend the pinecone flowers together, but also adds that lush, natural feel. I love how the soft moss contrasts with the textured pinecones—it’s like bringing the forest right into your home.
  5. Finish With a Ribbon:
Tie a red ribbon at the top of your wreath to give it a festive, polished look. Not into red? Feel free to choose any color or pattern that speaks to your personal style. A neutral burlap bow would look rustic and charming. Whatever your style is add it!

Making It Your Own

If you’re feeling extra crafty, consider dusting the pinecone tips with a bit of glitter or gently brushing on some metallic paint for a subtle shimmer. This is a great way to make the wreath feel seasonal—think gold for autumn, silver for winter, or even a hint of pink like Leslie did for a spring garden party. Stay tuned for Spring to see if I paint mine!
