Preparing Our Porch for Spring

|

Our porch is one of my favorite places to decorate and since the weather here in Colorado has been amazing lately I have been itching to get out there. I try to switch it up seasonally and this past week I finally started preparing our porch for Spring. It felt so good and I am loving the way it is coming along and can already see it transitioning to summer beautifully!

It's that time again...time to start preparing your porch for Spring!

Today I am joining some wonderful bloggers for the Spring Nesting blog hop hosted by Cecilia of My Thrift Store Addiction. If you are stopping by from At Home With Jemma’s beautiful afternoon tea post, welcome! I’m so glad you are here. I can’t wait to show you around my porch and introduce you to my favorite pew!

Preparing your porch for spring begins with the details!

Preparing our Porch for Spring

Honestly, my porch planning starts in my head long before it ever really happens for real.

I love to dream by scrolling through Pinterest, Instagram and some of my favorite magazines. This year I fell in love with hostas.

More specifically, hostas in pots.

It all started when my mom sent me this gorgeous post from @mettekrull over on Instagram. I knew I wanted to go in a similar direction but with my own personal touch.

It Always Starts Out Messy

I love having a vision, but while I’m bringing that vision to life our porch has to get messy before it gets pretty. Sometimes I go a bit crazy. I love to spread out when I am potting and planning. When I start to plan I collect all the things that I might possibly want to add out on our porch. This year I grabbed baskets, terra cotta pots, copper and galvanized metal. In my head I knew I wanted a green and white theme.

So that’s what I went in search of.

Planning your spring porch always starts out a bit messy but leads to that perfect Spring feel!

Deciding On Plants

Like I mentioned above, hostas were top on my list for the plants I wanted out on out porch. They are the perfect shade plants and do great in pots so obviously they are a fantastic choice for a spring covered porch like ours. I bravely ventured out to Lowes and Home Depot to look for a variety of hostas, boxwood and pretty white flowers. I scored and could not be happier with the selection they had!

Check out my post all about Tips and Tricks for Planting Hostas in Pots!

I’m just hoping I can keep them alive!

Pots and Planters

As you can see I have a variety of planters and pots on or porch. I love when things are clustered in threes and have texture. For starters I dug this copper boiler pot out of my storage closet, drilled some holes in the bottom, and decided it made the perfect place for plants on our porch. Notice it holds three plants!

Copper boilers are perfect for spring plants and porches!

TIP: Line the bottom of your planters with paper towels or coffee filters so that all of your potting soil doesn’t leak out when you water them.

I also used an old olive bucket and an old tree crate for my ferns. I had ferns on my spring porch last year as well!

AN old olive bucket brings just enough of that vintage touch to our spring porch.

Decorating The Porch

My favorite part is when the planting is all done and I can start putting it all together. I have so much fun decorating the porch!

A makeshift window box becomes a focal point on our porch.

This makeshift window box was my starting point. It’s an old metal planter that has rusted and aged beautifully. It sets perfectly on the back of my favorite pew.

Even Kona our Wheaten Terrier loves it!

I took the screens off to wash the front windows and she popped her cute little head out of the playroom. I couldn’t resist a picture!

Next to the pew I had fun adding an old stool, a galvanized pail with a boxwood bush, some faux flowers in a basket and a hosta in a pot. I love this sweet corner and once again focused on a grouping of threes! The boxwood bush is a nod to my favorite Boxwood green dresser!

The Front Door

Around the corner from my pew is our front door.

Welcome to our spring porch!

I love this spot because our viburnum snowball bush greets you as you walk up and gives you that cottage feel. We still have another week or two before it blooms, but here is a picture of a baby bloom. Make sure you can come back and visit my summer porch to see the beautiful white blooms or peek at the blooms from last year!

I added another hosta by the door as well.

Preparing Our Porch For Spring

When I step back and take a look at my porch I can’t help but smile because my vision has come to life. It’s actually better than I had imagined. Preparing our porch for spring has brought me so much joy this year. I sure do appreciate you stopping by for the tour. Now only if you all could come over and enjoy it with me. Then it would be even better!

WHy not use a copper boiler for some plants on your porch?

  6. What a lovely spring porch, Kelly! I am green with envy. I so wish we had a covered front porch to decorate. That pew is the perfect backdrop for all your wonderful diverse containers. I never thought of planting hostas in pots (we have tons around the yard, though). I actually potted some boxwoods for the patio a few years ago and we eventually transplanted them into a border. I hope you and your family gets a ton of enjoyment out of the beautiful space you’ve created. Great hopping with you! xoKathleen

    1. Thank you Kathleen! Aren’t hostas the best? I can’t believe I had never thought to put them in pots either?! I appreciate you stopping by.

  8. Kelly,
Once again your porch is fabulous and filled with things I love. The old copper pot looks beautiful with the hostas and white flowers. You asked me for tips on growing hostas in containers. You will be thrilled to know hostas are easy to grow. Truth be told, mine are sometimes neglected, but still manage to come back each spring. Over the years I have divided the starter plant repeatedly and will have to divide it again this year. The original plant is the one in the dark blue rectangular ceramic pot on my back deck.

One tip: Hostas need some sun to bloom. The transplanted hostas that are in full sun until midday are shaded by the house from the blistering afternoon sun in Texas. These plants have the most blooms. The original hosta that doesn’t get as much sun only has a few blooms.

Stay well, and enjoy porch living,

    Judith

    1. Judith thank you for your wonderful tips! Your hostas are beautiful. I love that they can be divided and look forward to them blooming. Enjoy your beautiful garden and plants!

  9. Kelly, what a beautiful porch for spring! I love the plants you chose. We are just beginning to add plants in our backyard; it’s exciting to watch things grow!

  10. I absolutely love your pew, Kelly! Everything about your front porch is so charming, and I’m sure everyone wishes they could come to visit you in person. I’ll have to look into getting some hostas when I finally venture out to the garden center. I’m so giddy to get planting!
