Fall Decor: Mantel decorating ideas that are simple and colorful

One of the first things (besides the blue kitchen) that caught my eye about our new house was the mantel and fully working fireplace. I have never had a real mantel to decorate before and I have always wanted one!

Now I am happy to say that I have a gorgeous wooden mantel that sits on an all white brick fireplace that is just begging to be decorated for every season. Up first is Fall!

I can’t wait to let you in on my thought process for bringing simple and colorful Fall décor to our mantel.

Paint by numbers brings a fun and colorful touch to any Fall decor or mantel.

How Do I Decorate My Mantel In The Fall?

Funny enough I recently asked myself this same question… how do I decorate my mantel in the Fall? For me having a fresh space to decorate has been a blast! It has stretched me and really made me think about my style. More and more I find myself being drawn to unique vintage pieces.

After asking myself where I should start I had a lot of fun scouring Pinterest, Instagram and magazines for inspiration.

A simple, vintage inspired Fall mantel.

I noticed a lot of layering. Groupings of like objects, texture, natural/foraged items and how most mantels had a statement piece. (Think art, mirrors, wreaths, architectural pieces)

A paint by numbers becomes a colorful Fall statement piece on our mantel.
A vintage paint my numbers is my statement piece.

Some other things I noticed and implemented were the importance of balancing items with varying heights along the entire mantel. This adds that collected feel that I adore!

How Can I Decorate For Fall Cheap?

When it comes to decorating our home for Fall I am always looking for ways to keep it budget friendly while still looking beautiful. There are several ways I decorate for Fall on the cheap and I had fun using these on our new mantel.

Adding texture to your Fall mnatel is one way to add warmth and a cohesive feel.
  1. I use foraged items like pinecones or (dried) flowers, grasses from our yard.
  2. I like to shop my home or my mom’s home!
  3. Visit the thrift stores or flea markets. (Give me all that vintage goodness!)
  4. DIY my decor! (check out my raffia pumpkin DIY!)
  5. Collect those cheap colorful books…year round.

Above you can see I used books to add height and color. My sweet little raffia DIY pumpkin sits on them and adds a fun nod to fall. the paint by number was a recent flea market find and the wood window was from a vintage market. The pinecone wreath was a Target clearance items from last year and the demi john bottles I have collected for years from flea markets!

How Do You Accessorize Your Mantel?

Like I mentioned above I had a lot of fun styling my mantel with two different looks. Both looks are similar and definitely you will see my style reflected in both. Below is a list of what I look for when I decorate any space and it’s what I used to help me accessorize my mantel.

  • color
  • shape
  • dimension
  • balance
  • texture

Below you will see the full view of both of my Fall mantel looks. Can you guess what one is my favorite? DO you have a favorite? They are both similar but unique in their own ways.

Mantel Look #1

This first Fall look just came together so nicely. I searched around our home for items that had blues and greens and came across these books and this paint by number that was previously in our master bedroom. I had fun layering items and keeping it simple with fun textures. The pinecones are a nod to our Fall front steps I recently shared!

The bench adds extra seating to our family room and it was a consignment shop find. My mom let me borrow her plaid throw to give it a fall feel. Plaid always feels like Fall to me!

Mantel Look #2

For this second look I repeated a lot of the same items from the Fall mantel above. However, as you can see I thinned things out a bit and added a huge pop of color with a new paint by numbers!

Honestly, I wasn’t planning to switch things up but I made a quick run through my favorite flea market this past week and this paint by number caught my eye! I loved the Fall colors and knew it needed to be added to my collection. I love it!

This time on the bench I added a fuzzy green throw that I picked up at IKEA years ago! I usually like to have it on my Christmas porch or in our old backyard. Oh, and did you notice the white logs in our fireplace? They add a fun feel and carry that bright white all the way down instead of having just a big black hole.

Easy and Bright Fall Decorating Ideas For Your Mantel or Fireplace

Overall I can say that decorating my first mantel was absolutely wonderful! You may be wondering which one my favorite was…and it was a close but I love the look of #2. Mostly because I am obsessed with my new Fall paint by numbers and all of it’s color! Hopefully you found a few tips for simple and colorful fall decorating ideas for your mantel.

  2. How exciting to have all new spaces to decorate! Both your looks are beautiful, however I LOVE the colorful paint by number! You have created the perfect mantel with all the colors of fall.

  3. Kelly, Both of your fall mantels are just charming–love your ideas! Thanks for including me in Welcome Home Saturday this week! Hugs, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction

  4. I like number #2 as well the green on the bench picks up the green in the paint by numbers picture and green is my favorite color……

  5. I vote for #1. Just my opinion, the smaller print fits with the other pieces better. Simple is Beautiful !

  6. They both look great, Kelly, but I like #1 better – I think I just like the art better – and it seems cozier to me.
Have a wonderful autumn. Enjoy the beautiful full Harvest Moon tonight. (well it is the 20th here now, but think it is still 19th there in CO.)

  7. I like version #2 for the color. I have a few paint by numbers I was collecting but they, like ceramic Christmas trees, suddenly became sought after and the cost went up. So much for cheap decor. 😀

  8. Kelly,
My favorite mantel is the first one with the basket covered wine bottle on the left. Pretty!!
I’m not ready for our cooler temps in Larkspur, Colorado…my garden needs more time😀
